Market ends lower for third straight day amid volatility

The stock market ended lower on Tuesday, dragging the indices on their third straight session in yet another volatile trading session. Nifty fell below 25,900 amid selling seen in the IT, media, and oil & gas stocks.

At close, the Sensex was down 313.70 points or 0.37% at 84,587.01, and the Nifty was down 74.70 points or 0.29% at 25,884.80.

The mid and small-cap segments outperformed, ending in the positive territory as the BSE Midcap index rose by 0.19% and the Smallcap index climbed 0.20%.

Among the sectors, the Nifty Realty index jumped 1.62%, followed by Nifty PSU Bank, which rose by 1.44%. On the other hand, Nifty IT dropped by 0.57% while the Nifty Bank index ended 0.03% down at 58,820.30.

On Nifty, the top gainers were the BEL, up by 1.58%, Hindalco Industries up by 1.44%, and SBI up by 1.33%.

On the other hand, Adani Enterprises (2.91%), Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (1.59%), and Trent (1.49%) ended as the top losers in the index.

Out of 4,330 stocks traded on the BSE, 2,095 advanced, while 2,076 declined, and some 159 stocks remained unchanged. On BSE, around 82 stocks hit their 52-week highs while 284 stocks hit their 52-week lows in intraday trade.

Those on the highs were Reliance Industries, Hero MotoCorp, AU Small Finance Bank, Federal Bank, and Shriram Finance. On the lows were UBL, Trent, Tejas Networks, SJVN, Chambal Fertilisers, and Deepak Nitrite.

Reliance Infrastructure shares fell 4% on a block deal of 1.26% equity, and Ashok Leyland shares rose 1% post-block deal. The shares of real estate companies rose, with Brigade Enterprises shares being the top gainer, rising over 4%.

Anant Raj, Phoenix Mills, and Prestige Estates shares were up around 3% each. Godrej Properties and Sobha shares rose around 2% each, while Oberoi Realty shares were up over 1%. DLF and Macrotech Developers (Lodha) shares rose nearly 1% each.
